Volunteer day at Flanders

This week we had a couple of new volunteers out with us! We had some essential bridge repairs to do at Flanders which turned out to be way more essential than thought. A lot of the wood underneath the top boards was rotten and had to be replaced. The volunteers did a great job and the bridge is looking as good as new!

Before
After – new and shiny!

We also clipped some birch around the tower that is encroaching onto the bog. It might seem counterproductive to be cutting trees down when Scotland has planting targets to meet. but trees soak up water on the bog and dry it out so we cut them down to restore the bog habitat.

We used the clipped birch to build a bonfire and enjoyed some hot chocolate and cake – just to make sure our new volunteers come back!
